The best known of Erskine Caldwell’s books. Written in 1932, there were many proposals to turn it into a movie, but it was repeatedly shelved, especially due to the fact that Tobacco Road was on the banned books list. And also because Caldwell wanted the movie to retain its ‘grit’. It was finally made into a movie in 1941, although the plot was re-written. Signet Book 627, 1949 (copyright 1932).
